Durham Receives Distinguished Graduate Award

Joseph R. Durham, a member of Eastman & Smith, received the Distinguished Graduate award from his law school alma mater, Lewis and Clark's Northwestern School of Law.  The honor is given to graduates whose “achievements in their profession and their community brings distinction to Lewis & Clark.”  For details regarding the award, please see the school’s web site.

Lewis & Clark Law School offers nine law degree certificate programs from animal law to tax law to the certificate Mr. Durham obtained, Environmental and Natural Resources Law.  It was founded in 1884, making it the first law school in the State of Oregon. The school’s mission involves developing “legal knowledge, critical thinking, practical skills, and values [to empower students] to excel as ethical and engaged professionals.”

A third generation garbage man who worked at his family’s hauling business during high school and college, Mr. Durham has litigated more than 1,000 environmental cases, advised local governments on solid waste and recycling collection contracts and worked with clients regarding all types of enforcement and public health issues.  He was appointed as the first environmental prosecutor for Franklin County, Ohio, and authored the Environmental Investigation Resource Guide.  In 2018 he was added to Best Lawyers in America® for Environmental Law.
